In our “Top Gun” Police-Style Riding class exercises focus on a variety of cornering skills and limited-space maneuvers. The ABATE Police Style Riding was developed and is presented by former police motor officer/trainer Don “Top” Gunn and concentrates on the low-speed maneuvers taught to police officers for the purposes of increasing riding proficiency as well as confidence. Learn to operate a motorcycle at its limits with emphasis on turning in the smallest area, use of transmission, clutch, and brakes for the highest level of control, and practice maximum braking and brake-and-escape maneuvers. Smaller-sized training bikes are used on the first day of this two-day course. Students are encouraged to use their own (safe street-legal) bike on the second day. JUDI PURCELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Judi Purcell was an avid motorcyclist and loved teaching others to share her enthusiasm for riding. After we lost Judi to a serious illness in November 2002, the ABATE State Board of Directors voted to create a scholarship to honor her years of helping others learn to ride. Judi’s memory lives on in those who benefit from this scholarship.
ABATE awards four scholarships per year, quarterly. Applicants are asked to fill out the application and return it with a short essay stating why this scholarship would be beneficial to them.
Candidates must be at least 15 years of age and currently hold a driver’s license or driver’s instructional permit.
Scholarship applications may be returned to the ABATE office by mail, email (abategeneral@abateofcolo.org) or fax 303-789-2915. Applications will be reviewed by a committee and successful candidates will be notified by phone or email and instructed as to how to sign up for the class.
